The European Commission has unveiled its Competitiveness Compass, outlining priorities for the EU economy over the next five years. The report highlights sluggish productivity growth as a major challenge, citing high energy costs, regulatory burdens, and supply chain dependencies.
A key focus is ensuring that economic competitiveness aligns with the EU’s 2050 decarbonisation goals. The Clean Industrial Deal and circular business models are central to this vision. The circular economy is emphasised as a crucial tool for reducing dependencies, boosting resource efficiency, and driving economic security. The EU’s remanufacturing sector, valued at €31 billion, is expected to reach €100 billion by 2030, creating 500,000 new jobs.
To support this shift, the Circular Economy Act, set for 2026, will promote recycling, eco-design, and reduced reliance on virgin materials. Ultimately, the EU sees the circular economy as essential to both sustainability and competitiveness.
